Eating on the Road

As truck drivers, a challenge that we have is finding healthy food to eat on our travels. We are fortunate to have a good size refrigerator/freezer in our truck which allows us to bring more healthy food from home and shop less while on the road. Unfortunately, we find that we are eating the same types of food over and over again. This causes us to experience boredom in our meal selections. The end result is that we tend to eat truck stop food for more variety. Do you experience similar diet dilemmas?

To try and add some variety to our menu planning we have decided to try one of the many meal prep plans that are shipped directly to our home. This is all new to us so we are learning as we go. So far the biggest obstacle is that the company wants to send prepared meals to our home on a weekly basis. Obviously, as truck drivers we cannot be home every week to take receipt of the box or boxes that are delivered. I have learned that I can pause orders from being delivered; however, we were still inadvertently charged for a week that I had previously paused only to be credited back a day or so later. The meals that have been shipped came on time and in good condition. Of the meals we have eaten, most seem to have good flavors. Hopefully, we will continue to get a good variety of flavors and menus.

Where do you shop when you are away from your favorite grocery stores? How do you choose meals while on the road? How do you prepare those meals? With food costs so high, how often do you eat out? Are you health conscious about what you eat or do you eat what you like or what is available?

For us, we usually shop at super Walmart while on the road. When home, we never buy food from Walmart. We have a Costco at home and on occasion we have found Costco in other parts of the country. We find it interesting to find different choices at Costco stores as compared to what we find in our local area. We have also gone to a local grocery store that is not found in our home state. That was a fun experience to see such different items available as compared to what we have back home.

We bring baked or grilled items from home, freeze them and reheat them while on the road. If cooking on the road, we use our microwave/convection oven/grill, our induction cooktop or an Insta-pot. I have seen social media pages that have topics about eating healthy on the road. I find that many healthy recipes are very challenging to make in a semi. And do not get me started about the smells that are left behind when cooking fish in the truck!

Here’s to millions of safe, profitable and DELICIOUS miles.
